CORN STARCH is GOLD

KM in NH - best
I was the youngest child, and had no experience with babies. My first baby was covered with really red, horrible diaper rash, and I was desperate.

I took her to the Dr. who gave us all kinds of ointments, and baby powders - NONE of which worked - at all, and it just kept getting worse and worse. She was crying all the time, and I was desperate.

An old man at work suggested I try Corn Starch. I didn't hold out much hope, but I was desperate, so I tried it.

WOW!!! I can't tell you how fast, and thoroughly it worked! I never had any diaper rash on my daughter again, or my sons that I had after.

I've used Corn starch on myself, and my whole family, to keep us all dry and heat rash free, ever since.

Cheap, easy, and it works better than anything else I've ever tried. (And, I've subsequently learned that Talcum Powder is bad for you, and you should never use it on a baby.)

Corn starch also has the advantage of absorbing smells, so I just toss in a pinch of some expensive powder I was given as a gift, and it spreads to the whole box of corn starch within a day. I've had the same smell for years, with only the one original box of expensive powder. (You can smear a bit of nice smelling lotion or perfume on the lid of a container of corn starch, to alter the smell, too.)

I LOVE corn starch and use it every single day.

Prevention is always good but just in case...

Salone's mother in Jax, Fl. - best
When my daughter was first born I thought that if I changed her pamper regularly that I could prevent diaper rash. Not! At the first sight of irritation I started applying Vaseline after each change. Most importantly in her creases...that's where I first recognized irritation. I never apply baby powder directly to her skin. If I want that powder scent I would first apply the powder to the pamper and rub it in well enough so that there's no extra to get off on her. I first bought the Vaseline in the tube...the only place that I can seem to find it is Target. But, now it just doesn't matter as long as it's 100% petroleum jelly.

Skin Rash

Ann in Connecticut - best
I know this page is about diaper rash, but I just want to thank the lady in Australia for her suggestion about vinegar in the bath.

I am 55, and have somehow got a rash on my back that is like pimples and very itchy, (but if you scratch then the pimples open and they bleed, there is no pus) and I have no clue how I got it. I figured it would go away on it's own but after months, it has not and it started spreading, and the itch was driving me crazy.

Everything on the Internet I read was not my symptoms, and they always say, Well you must be allergic to something then." But I do not believe that.

Anyway, at her suggestion, I went to the store and got some vinegar, but all they had was the white vinegar, so I had to get that. I fixed a full tub of warm water and poured about 2 cups of vinegar in it, and parked myself there with a good book for about 2 hrs.

I did not use soap after soaking, just got out of the tub and dried, and I went to bed wondering if it really helped. But this morning all has changed. The itchy pimples are going away and I feel a lot better.

I don't know if this has cured this rash or not, but now I have relief, and if it tries to come back I will just soak in the tub again.

Prevention better than cure

Ursula in Melbourne, Australia - best
My first of three girls was very prone to diaper rash and on a couple of occasions it would turn out to be Thrush and not heal until treated by the Dr. as such. After research I found that the skins' acid mantle is one of the first lines of defense against infection. Most baby baths and soaps are in an alkaline base so since my I discovered this I started putting a splash of Vinegar into the bathwater and left all soaps out of the bathroom. Don't use too much - you just want to tip the bathwater into the slightly acid range. Wow! Suddenly the skin wasn't going dry NOR was she suffering with Diaper Rash nearly as often (it only happened if I was delayed in changing a nappy for whatever reason). The whole family uses it now as it also means that any cuts and scrapes are healing quicker than ever before. Also Apple Cider Vinegar leaves a very slight apple-ish smell that I've come to love.

Aloe Vera

Jen in SLC, UT - good
This works for mild irritations. Take a fresh branch of aloe vera and squeeze the juice and pulp onto the affected area. Be sure to cover the whole area, and also around the irritated skin. The best part? Baby thinks it feels funny, and will laugh during this treatment!

Diaper Rash

Don't have any powder or diaper rash cream? What did they do before diaper rash cream was invented? Put cornstarch in a shaker and sprinkle on affected area. It will keep the wetness away from their little behinds.

If you don't have a shaker make one from a empty pickle jar. Poke holes in the metal lid with a nail and hammer.
